When you are in Lefkada, only one thing is sure, you will never get bored. How is this going to happen? Here are some things you can do and see in Lefkada!

Beaches:
No need to say much about the beaches of Lefkada. Gold sand and crystal water are what made Lefkada’s beaches famous around the globe. Probably the most famous one is the beach of Porto Katsiki placed on the southern west end of the island. Also each one of Egremni, Kathisma and Milos on the west side of the island, have a special beauty that will convince even the most demanding visitor. On the south also you can find the beaches of Poros (also known as Mikros Gialos) and Vasiliki. So start exploring the countless beaches of Lefkada, famous or not, and you will for sure be amazed by the beauty of the island!

Water sports:
Apart from the beaches, Lefkada is very well known in the water-sport world as the beach of Vasiliki (on the south) and Agios Ioanis (on the north) provide the best conditions for many water sports such as kite-surfing and wind-surfing. Suitable for amateurs or more experienced surfers, depending on the weather. Also every summer, there are many sport events that take place at those beaches, so even if you are not familiar with water sports it is a great opportunity to see experienced surfers competing and performing fascinating stunts. Finally, in the village of Nidri you can have fun with some motor water sports such as tubes, water-ski and many other that are also suitable for children, while you enjoy a drink in one of the many beach bars!

Sightseeing:
Because education never stops, we can still learn something in our vocation. Apart from the leisure events, Lefkada is according to Homer the island of Odysseus, so it would be wrong to say that Lefkada has no culture. First of all, when you enter the island by car, the first thing you see is the castle of Santa Mavra which was built by the Venetians . It is in very good condition and you can visit it almost every time of the day. Also the archeological museum of cultural history, which is placed inside the City Hall, can give you an idea of the ancient Lefkada and the way of life thousand years ago! Moreover, the waterfalls just outside the village of Nidri create a beautiful atmosphere that will make you think you are in a tropical place.

Last but not the least, the famous private island of Scorpios just 10 minutes by boat from Nidri. Aristotelis Onasis, the most famous billionaire of Greece, was so astonished by the beauty of the area, that he wanted a place, a small paradise as he used to say, to spend his free time and escape from the responsibilities his job had. Apparently, you can not enter the island but there are boats departing from Nidri that approach it and you can see the buildings on the island and maybe take a bath close to the private beach. Also another smaller private island next to Scorpios, that belonged to our famous poet of the Revelation of 1821, Aristotelis Valaoritis, is a nice place to visit.

Also don’t forget to visit the coastal village of Agios Nikitas in the northwest. A beautiful traditional fishing village, that has maintained the nice atmosphere of the 1960. A relaxing place where you can enjoy a bath in the beach in front of the village, or a drink/coffee in the coastal bars. A great view specially during the night, takes you many years back!

Mountain villages:
Do you want to get a taste on how life was 50 years ago on the island? Then visit the villages that are found scattered on the mountain of Lefkada. The main one is called Karia and it is placed in the center of the island. There are many events that take place in Karia during the summer, such as the representation of the traditional wedding in August, and the wine festival also in August. If you do a small research you will find many festivals in almost every village. Other traditional villages are Eglouvi, which produces the famous lentil of Eglouvi, Agios Petros in the south, Kalamitsi in the north west, and many other. Just take a car and explore the mountain of Lefkada, you will be amazed by the views and the variety of the landscapes!

International Folklor Festival:
This international Festival is probably the biggest and more important cultural event that takes place in Lefkada. It first started in 1952 and since then it takes place every year. Many traditional dancing groups come from all around the world to take part in this festival in order to show, share and exchange their culture, learn from each other and entertain the people. During the Festival, countries come closer, forget about differences and everyone enjoys the great atmosphere that is created but the many different musics, colours and traditions! A great party that lasts around a week takes place in the city of Lefkada usually in the middle of August. It is something you can’t miss and, for sure, you will never forget!
